Rhona Hoffman Gallery is excited to present our sixth exhibition with Jacob Hashimoto. Featuring nine new wall-mounted sculptural works, the exhibition highlights Hashimoto’s continued exploration of the intertwined traditions of landscape painting, handicraft, and modernist abstraction. From the artist’s densely layered compositions of elaborately patterned bamboo-and-paper kites, kaleidoscopic images emerge that reference virtual space, natural environments, and the cosmos.
A resolutely interdisciplinary artist, Hashimoto’s practice spans painting, sculpture, printmaking, and installation. His works often respond to memories and experiences of specific sites, in particular where nature and civilization coalesce. For Hashimoto, the intensely laborious process that goes into creating his works from hundreds of handmade kites is a crucial component of their meditative, experiential quality, inviting contemplations of scale at both the micro and macro register.

Jacob Hashimoto was born in Greeley, Colorado in 1973 and is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He lives and works in Ossining, New York. Hashimoto has been featured in museum exhibitions at MOCA Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, MACRO - Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice, LACMA - Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California, Schauwerk Sindlefingen in Germany, Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art in Finland, Galleria d’Arte Moderna “Achille Forti” in Italy, Museo di Storia Naturale in Italy, Site Santa Fe in New Mexico, Science Museum of Oklahoma, and the Crow Museum of Asian Art in Texas. He has also had solo shows at Studio la Città in Verona, Galerie Forsblom in Helsinki, Mary Boone Gallery in New York, Anglim Gilbert Gallery in San Francisco, Leila Heller Gallery in Dubai, and Makasiini Contemporary in Turku, among others.
